Learning Strategies & Resources (LSR)

LSR Program Description

The Learning Strategies and Resources Program (LSR Program) was initiated in 1992 by the Center for the Advancement of Learning with the purpose of providing academic support to selected at-risk students of the Muskingum College community. Support may include: weekly workshops, weekly strategy sessions, and one-time sessions. LSR instruction during the second semester focuses on helping students generalize strategies for successful performance across the curriculum. The staff's goal is to help all students understand more about themselves and the way they learn, which in turn helps make them more effective and successful learners.

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning refers to a method of instruction in which students are placed in small groups and work together to achieve a common goal. In the Center, cooperative learning opportunities focused on strategies for learning are the basis of the LSR Program.

LSR Program Services & Fees

LSR Program support services include weekly strategy sessions. LSR services are provided by professional staff members of the Center for Advancement of Learning, who are selected for their proficiency in content areas, experience as professional educators and commitment to a learning strategies philosophy.

Weekly LSR sessions cover a wide range of general learning strategy topics, such as time management, organization, and testing strategies, as well as strategies application in specific content areas. Each student is encouraged to actively participate through interaction and task completion through guided practice during personalized sessions.

Participants in the LSR Program meet for one-half hour per week for strategy instruction and application. Time management and organizational strategies are stressed along with course-specific strategies. Strategies designed to enhance or improve student academic skills. Content-based tutoring is not provided during weekly LSR sessions. Typical activities that may occur during LSR sessions include:

  • Helping students determine an effective system for organizing course work and for managing academic and social time
  • Helping students develop a feeling of accountability for their individual learning process and the outcomes of this process by setting short-term and long-term goals and priorities
  • Discussing and applying the results of the LASSI and other learning assessments as requested.
  • Applying specific strategies based on past success and failure to current course work
  • Discussing the options of spacing courses as well as retaking courses to raise the grade point average
  • Helping students track specific term grades for each course
  • Helping students realistically evaluate their long-term and short-term goals and their progress towards those goals
  • Encouraging student advocacy with faculty

One-time strategy sessions are provided to students who request such services on an as-needed basis.

Because content tutoring is not included in the LSR Program services, there is no charge for students to participate in the weekly personal sessions or one-time sessions.
