Muskies tie the 1998 squad for highest-ever finish at NCAA regional
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, November 10, 2012 - The Muskingum University men’s cross country team finished 10th out of 37 teams at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships at Anderson University on Saturday. The finish tied the 1998 Muskie team for the highest-ever finish by any cross country team in school history.
Leading the way was senior All-Ohio Conference honoree Tyler Smith. Smith finished his college cross country career by placing 32nd with a time of 26:05. Smith was named All-Great Lakes Region for his performance. He became the first Muskie since 2004 to be named all-region.
Behind Smith was junior Johnny Derov who placed 55th overall with a time of 26:24. Close behind Derov was the sophomore duo of Ryan Dodd and Tom Tussey who placed 64th and 66th, while running times of 26:30 and 26:32, respectively. Another sophomore, Daniel Mullen came in 154th with a time of 27:52.
Rounding out the varsity team was sophomore Tim Fries, who placed 177th with a time of 28:18, and senior Nova Martin who finished his college cross country career with a 191st place with a time of 28:39.
