Coach Newberry notches career win 900 at Marietta
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, April 20, 2010 -
Muskingum University softball coach Donna Newberry, the all-time career wins leader in NCAA Division III, notched her 900th career win in game one of the Muskies' doubleheader split at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College Tuesday.
Newberry, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame member, is only the 25th coach across all NCAA Divisions to ever achieve 900 victories. During her illustrious career at Muskingum, Newberry has won 18 Ohio Athletic Conference championships, led the Muskies to 18 NCAA regional appearances, advanced to eight NCAA World Series and captured Muskingum’s first-ever NCAA National Championship in 2001.
The Muskies won game one 8-3 to give Coach Newberry her milestone win. Muskingum seized control of the outing early with a three-run first inning. The scoring was highlighted by sophomore Aly Mazzei's RBI double, senior Chloe Moloney's RBI single and freshman Apryl Patterson's hit by pitch RBI. The Fish extended its lead to 4-0 in the second on Mazzei's solo home run to left center. Mazzei ended the game going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Muskingum added two in the fourth on junior Mary Margaret Boda's RBI double and freshman Holly Norris' RBI single. The Muskies capped its scoring in the sixth on sophomore Kristyn Heagen's pinch hit RBI double. Muskingum ended the game with 13 hits.
Sophomore Ashley Price starred in the center of the diamond tossing a complete game nine-hitter with three runs (two earned) and four strikeouts to move to 8-6 on the season. She also added a 3-for-3 day at the plate.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers handed the Muskies a 3-2 setback. Muskingum trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh and had runners on second and third with one out but could only muster one run in the frame. Junior Mary Margaret Boda, freshman Jendy Weppler and senior Katie Reese led the Muskies with two hits each. Boda and Weppler also added an RBI apiece.
Sophomore pitcher Carissa Diebler suffered the loss after tossing five innings and allowing 12 hits and three earned runs. She now stands at 4-5 on the season.
Muskingum (15-15, 6-6) hits the field next when it travels to fourth-ranked Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 24. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
