Tournament preview
#1 seed - Muskingum College of New Concord, Ohio, is 38-5 overall and won its eighth straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament last week. The Muskies are making their eighth straight NCAA appearance and 15th in the past 20 years. The Muskies are ranked fifth in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division III Top 25.
#2 seed - Thomas More College of Crestview Hills, Kentucky, is making its first-ever NCAA appearance. The Saints (19-9), an independent college, went 17-2 in games played in-region.
#3 seed - Lake Forest College of Lake Forest, Illinois, enters the regional tournament with a 23-13-1 overall record. The Forester's captured their fourth straight Midwest Conference Championship (MWC) title last weekend. Lake Forest is making its fourth NCAA appearance.
#4 seed - Defiance College of Defiance, Ohio, enters the regional tournament with a 27-15 overall record. The Yellow Jackets are making their second straight NCAA appearance after winning the Heartland Collegiate Conference championship.
#5 seed - University of Pitt.-Bradford of Bradford, Pennsylvania, is making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers, 24-12-1 overall, won their third straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMC) title last week.
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division III Softball Committee has announced the 43 teams that will compete in the Division III Softball Championship.
Five teams will compete at five first-round sites and six teams will compete at three other first-round sites for a total of eight first-round sites. All first-rounds will use a double-elimination format.
The five-team first-rounds will be held May 13-15 on the campuses of competing institutions, with the rain date being May 16. The six-team first-rounds will be held May 13-16, on the campuses of competing institutions, with the rain date being May 16. The finals, hosted by Peace College, will be held May 20-24 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Thirty-six conferences have been granted automatic qualification and five independents were selected for the 2005 championship. The two remaining teams were selected on an at-large basis from automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining independent institutions.
