Muskies sweep Capital to end their 2008 season
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, May 4, 2008 - The Muskingum College baseball team swept Capital University on Sunday afternoon, 9-2 and 7-2. The Fighting Muskies end their 2008 season with an overall record of 21-18. [Game 1 boxscore] [Game 2 boxscore]
In game one, the Muskies struck first by scoring one run in the first and second innings. The runs came from a pair of home runs by freshman left fielder Erik Spitzer and senior first basemen Seth Sibert. However, Capital answered with a run in the second to cut the Muskie lead to one. The game remained 2-1 until the fifth inning as Muskingum posted five runs to cushion their lead to 7-1. Three of the five runs came from a three-run home run by sophomore catcher Brock Whiteman, and the next two runs came way of a two-RBI single to right field by sophomore center fielder Nathan VanMeter. Capital scored only one more run in the contest, as Muskingum added two more runs to clinch the win. In the sixth, Whiteman doubled in a run, while senior designated hitter Brock Huntsman singled in Whiteman.
Sophomore hurler Aubrey Neuhart pitched a complete game four-hitter with two strikeouts en route to picking up his team-high seventh win. Neuhart also led the pitching staff with 42 strikeouts.
Game two remained scoreless until Muskingum scored a run in the fourth inning by way of junior second baseman Tyler Gibb's RBI single to left field scoring VanMeter. Capital answered with one run in the seventh, but the Fighting Muskies posted three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came way of a throwing error by Capital which scored Spitzer, and Sibert drove in the other two runs off of a single to left field. The Crusaders tallied their final run in the eighth inning, as the Fighting Fish added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to end their 2008 season. Spitzer drove in the first two runs by way of a double to left field and Huntsman hit in Spitzer with a single to center.
Junior hurler Levi Shaw fired 8.1 innings of six-hit ball with five strikeouts to capture his fifth win of the season. Shaw ended the year with a team-best ERA of 3.63.
Whiteman ends his sophomore campaign with an impressive team-best .450 batting average. He also led the squad in hits (67), doubles (19), triples (2), home runs (9), RBI's (51) and slugging percentage (.785).
With the sweep, the Muskies end their 2008 season at 21-18 overall and 6-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
