George K. Leitch, November 20, 2010, South Port Square, Port Charlotte, Florida. Born in 1913, George grew up in the Dormont area
of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a 1935 graduate of Muskingum, where
he met the love of his life, Grace Ranson ’36 Leitch, whom he married April 11, 1941. She died in 2008 shortly before their 67th anniversary. After graduation, George began his employment at
the Union National Bank of Pittsburgh (UNB), which was the start of a
45-year banking career there. He e retired in 1980 as vice president,
trust administration. George’s banking career was interrupted by World
War II and in 1943 George enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Reserve
Officer. His entire tour of duty was served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin (CP13) where Lieutenant Leitch moved from Gunnery Officer to Personnel
Officer, then Aide to the Executive Officer and Captain, then Ship
Secretary, and Aide to the Commanding Officer. George loved to tell
stories of his service on the Franklin, which became the “worst
damaged ship in history to be able to return to port” when, on a single
day in its last battle, the crew of 3,400 in the morning had only 704
survivors by nightfall. After the war, George returned to UNB in
Pittsburgh where he and Grace raised their three children in Bethel Park
and Mt. Lebanon. George and Grace both remained closely associated
with Muskingum through the rest of their lives. George served as
national president of the Alumni Association and on the Board of
Trustees. He was active with the Alban alumni and participated in the
development of Fraternity Circle. For over 50 years the Leitches rarely
missed a homecoming or reunion weekend, and participated in countless
other projects at Muskingum. When delivering the keynote speech at a
Heritage Day Dinner in 1993, George noted that his Uncle Jim first
attended Muskingum in 1897, Grace’s father and uncle in 1904, and by
1993 he and Grace could name over 75 members of their extended families
who were Muskingum graduates. George was also a board member of the Coalition
for Christian Outreach and served on their executive and development
committees. Through his banking career, he introduced many individuals
and companies to the work of the Coalition, helping to form cooperative
relationships and opportunities for fund raising to benefit the
Coalition’s mission. George was also a lifelong supporter of the
United Presbyterian Church. At the Mt. Lebanon U.P. Church he served as
elder, trustee and church treasurer. He was a member of the Council on
Theological Education for the U.P. Church. Due to Grace’s experiences
as a missionary kid in India, the Leitches were ardent supporters of
mission work worldwide. They were proud of their involvement in the
formation of a couple’s Sunday School group that began with 13 couples
and over the next 35 years grew to over 120 couples who generated over
$650,000 in mission giving. After retiring to Punta Gorda Isles,
Florida, they became charter members of Burnt Store Presbyterian Church,
where George served on the original steering committee, was an elder
and church treasurer. He was on the board of the Southwest Florida
Presbytery Foundation, a member of the Presbytery’s Transitional Task
Force and the Capital Funds Committee. George is survived by his son, Donald R. Leitch of Punta Gorda; his daughter, Jerilyn Leitch ’74 Ryder and her husband, John Ryder ’73 of Germantown, Tennessee; Chari Stanley-Leitch of Punta Gorda, five
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents
and 5 siblings, George was predeceased by his wife Grace Ranson ’36 Leitch in 2008 and his son Richard W. Leitch ’72 in 2007. This obituary provided by the family. 1/11

Joe McDaniel, a member of the Muskies Hall of Fame, held a reunion recently in Danville, Kentucky with his former high school and Muskingum basketball coach, Dr. Don Swegan, who coached the Muskingum team from 1952 to 1954. The site of the reunion was Joe McDaniel Field at Centre College, dedicated in Joe’s name in 2011 to commemorate his career as head football coach from 1980 to 1997 and then as athletic director until 2002. Don coached Joe in both football and basketball at Fredericktown High School in Ohio, and Joe is in that school’s Hall of Fame. Joe played basketball at Muskingum from 1952 to 1954 under Don, and football for four years under Ed Sherman. For two years Joe was assistant coach at Marion Harding High and was an assistant football coach for the Muskies from 1958 to 1965. He was then head coach at Marion Harding High School from 1965 to 1966, prior to serving as head football coach at Marietta College From 1966 to 1980. Joe is the winningest football coach at both Marietta College and Centre College and he is in the Hall of Fame at both schools. Don, a College of Wooster Hall of Famer, served as an assistant basketball coach at Penn State for five years, after leaving Muskingum to work on his doctorate. He then was head basketball coach at both West Chester University and Baldwin Wallace University, before heading the development programs at three different universities. Joe and Don, along with Muskies Hall of Famer Bob Stokes ’53, are making plans for a reunion of members from the 1952 to 1956 era football and basketball teams, to be held during Muskingum’s 2013 Alumni Weekend, to be held June 14 to 16 on the campus. In the photo: Joe McDaniel (left) and Don Swegan. This update provided by Don Swegan. 9/12
Joe McDaniel has been honored with the renaming of the football field at Centre College for him, marking his tenure as the college’s most successful football coach. Joe served as head football coach from 1980 to 1997 and was a three-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. His teams won seven conference championships and he amassed an overall career record of 166-22-5, which includes his time at Marietta College. This ranked him seventh in winning percentage among NCAA Division III football coaches at the time of his retirement. Joe also served as Centre’s athletic director from 1998 to 2002, and men’s golf coach from 1981 to 1993. His golf teams won three conference championships and, in 1984,
he led the team to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. He is a member of the athletic halls of fame at Centre, Marietta and Muskingum, as well as Fredericktown High School. Centre’s football field is now known as Joe McDaniel Field, which is indicated by a new panel on the scoreboard and wrought iron arches over the entrance gates. The rededication took place during Centre’s Homecoming festivities on October 22. Photo from the Centre College web site. 10/11
