Notes submitted will be edited for length and style.

Photos submitted by regular mail should be on photographic paper, not larger than 5 by 7 inches. Those submitted by email should be in jpeg format at 72 dpi. We cannot accept photos that are formatted for Microsoft PowerPoint or that are printed on plain paper.

Any submitted photo must contain at least one alumnus, and all Muskies must be identified, left to right, with their name, maiden name and year of graduation.

Submission of a photo implies that the sender has the right to publish that photo. Copyrighted or watermarked photos will not be used, unless the copyright is held by the sender.

Only material received from Muskingum College alumni, faculty or staff, members of their immediate family, or from their employer will be considered. Material submitted from an employer must be on company letterhead and must include the name of the person sending the submission and their phone number.

James K. Leitch, July 15, 2005.
James and his wife, the late Helen Lois Kyle ’25 Leitch, established the James K. and Helen K. Leitch Scholarship at Muskingum.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Leitch ’32 Maguire.  Among his survivors are his brother, George K. Leitch ’35, his son, James ’50, his daughter Pidge Leitch ’58 Diehl, and his sister.

Boyd was a 1982 recipient of Muskingum’s Distinguished Service Award, the college’s highest alumni honor.  A World War II veteran, Boyd earned his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where a scholarship in his honor is awarded annually to a graduate student in the College of Public Health Administration.  He had a long career as a hospital administrator in the Cleveland and Pittsburgh areas.  Among his survivors is his wife, Loraine.

David T. Deninson has had a new soybean variety posthumously named is his honor by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center at The Ohio State University.  David was for many years chief inspector for the Ohio Seed Development Association. 

    1944

Forrest B. Dannebring and his wife, Marjorie Bone Dannebring were included in an article in the January/February edition of AARP Magazine.  The article, titled At First Sight, told stories of how and where long-time couples met.  Forrest and Marjorie met at Muskingum when both were early for a choir practice, and they’ve been married for 60 years.

    1948

Rex Hoon has written a memoir of his experiences in World War II titled, My Odyssey as a World War II Combat Foot Soldier with the Texas “Fighting 36th” Infantry Division in Italy and France.  His division saw 137 days of combat conditions in Italy and he was wounded there.  Rex’s wife is Joan Spillman ’51 Hoon.

James W. White was honored in 2004 on the 50th anniversary of the College Entrance Examinations Board and the College Scholarship Service as one of its 50 Outstanding Financial Aid Officers.  James retired from Oberlin College.

Betty Steele Everett was featured in a story in Defiance, Ohio’s The Crescent News, outlining her accomplishments as a Christian writer.  She has placed more than 4,000 articles and stories, published nine books and has seen her work appear in 13 anthologies. Betty’s husband is Horace Everett ’49.

    1951

Richard G. Olinger and his wife, Anna, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 6, 2005.  The couple retired as owners of Home Candy Company in Coshocton.  Their daughter is Lisa A. Olinger ’92.

Shirley Kimmel Wagner received the 2006 Zeisberger Heckewelder Award for 2006 from the Tuscarawas County Historical Society in recognition of her broad support of community activities in the county and in New Philadelphia.  Shirley received the Distinguished Alumni Service award from Muskingum in 2005.

    1953

J. Rex Mitchell has had one of his original musical compositions, Introduction and Fantasia performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall.  He also has begun self-publishing his many original work.

    1955 Bernice Finley Litt and her husband, Wendell, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2005.  Muskies in the family include their daughter Susan Litt ’82 Ballantine  and their sons, Gordon ’80 and David ’78.
    1956

John T. Brewer has been named Volunteer of the Year at the Rocky River Senior Center.  He has been a volunteer there for 11 years and, in 2004, logged more than 300 hours of work at the center.  He also is president of the Rocky River Senior Council.  He and his wife, Joan Caughey ’54 Brewer, live in Rocky River.

Bruce W. Porter has published a new book Sermons for All Seasons.  The book contains 35 sermons and is dedicated to the four churches he has served.  Proceeds from the sale of the book go to Church of the Palms in Sarasota, Florida, where he is pastor emeritus. 

Benjamin D. Davis and his wife, Virginia Rodgers ’57 Davis, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 7, 2006. 

Rudolph “Rudy” Gerlach received a national award from the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) for his life’s work teaching about environmental safety.  The Mary McMillan Memorial Friend of the Academy Award is presented to non-ACHMM members who make outstanding contributions to the certified hazardous materials managers credential or the overall goals of the ACHMM.  Rudy retired in 1993 as professor of chemistry at Muskingum.

William B. Dunn has been named one of “10 Super Lawyers” in the state of Michigan in research conducted by Law and Politics magazine.  Only five percent of the lawyers submitted for inclusion in the magazine are selected.  Dunn is an attorney with the Detroit office of Clark Hill, PLC. He also was appointed chair of the State Bar of Michigan Professional Ethics Committee.  He is a member of Clark Hill PLC, where he is chair of the Real Estate Practice Group.

Alan Travis has been named to the Franklin County Court of Appeals.  Previously, he had been a judge with the Franklin County Common Pleas Court.  He earned his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law. 

A. Bowman Budinger retired from Osman Sylvania after 39 years of service, most recently with the company’s corporate research and development center in Beverly, Massachusetts.  During his career, he was awarded 18 United States patents and authored more than 20 technical papers and presentations in the area of physics technology of light sources.  He and his wife, Carol Cover ’62 Budinger live in Westford, Massachusetts. 

Sandra E. O’Connell has published a book, An American Family in World War II, with her husband, Ralph Minker, and historian Harry Butowsky. The book is based on Reverend Minker’s letters home during his training and service during the war.

Cyrus A. McKinney, Jr. was promoted to managing director of investments for Wachovia Securities in Columbus.

V. Lucille Hatcher Ringer celebrated her 95th birthday on June 14. Lucille retired from Plainfield Elementary School in 1976, concluding a teaching career that began in a one-room school that housed all eight grades. Lucille lives in Kimbolton and her daughter is Ella Ringer ’66 McPeak.

Johanna Doutt Hancock has retired after seven years of service with the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. 

Mary Phillips Arnett retired in May, 2006, after 25 years as a violinist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.  In October, 2006, she was named Counselor of the Year by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs for her work as a music teacher. 

Roger Welsh retired as athletic director at Capital University, concluding 15 years of service in that position, and 30 years with the university’s health and sport science department.

Gordon Spillman, a Muskingum College Trustee, has joined First Federal Community Bank in Coshocton as director of lending.  Previously, Gordon has worked for more than 20 years at Bank One in Coshocton and most recently was with First Federal Savings Bank of Eastern Ohio.  Three children are fellow Muskies, Gordon ’94, Lisa M. Spillman ’95 Leffler and Christine ’92.

Leslee Tracey Cordova was honored by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson with one of the state’s “Top 25 Women-Owned Business” awards.  Leslee is co-owner and co-executive director of R-Way, LLC, which provides services to individuals who have developmental disabilities.   She was also recognized by New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron for “her exemplary dedication and service in enhancing the quality of life among people who have developmental disabilities.”

Lucretia Wilson Mattson has been appointed as a professional accounting member of the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board.  Lucretia, who is an associate professor in the Department of Accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received the appointment from Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle.  Her term on the board will end in 2007.

Jacqueline Dudek Woods, a Muskingum College Trustee and retired president of SBC Ameritech Ohio, has been named to the Board of Directors at University Hospitals Health Systems and University Hospitals of Cleveland.  Currently, Jacqueline is a senior consultant with Landau Public Relations, and serves on the boards of The Timken Company, Anderson, Incorporated, Office Max, the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Cleveland Foundation.

Dennis D. Berkey was recently installed as the 15th president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is a recognized leader and innovator whose distinguished academic career includes 30 years of service as a faculty member, an academic department head, a dean, and a provost at Boston University.  He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Miami University and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati.

Keith A. Roberts has co-authored an introductory sociology textbook, Our Social World.  Keith is chair of the department of anthropology and sociology at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.

Gail Curtis Morse has been elected to the Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) Board of Directors.  Gail is a senior portfolio manager at Mellon Bank.  MCC provides community based outreach, education and support to improve maternal and child health care and well-being through a collaboration of individuals, families, providers and communities. 

Jeffrey G. Reed has been promoted to professor of management at Marian College.  He will continue his responsibilities as director of the management program there.    

Lawrence Butterini has been named 2005 PAESSP High School Principal of the Year for the North Allegheny School District in the MetLife/NASSP Principal of the Year program.

Patricia Caldwell Paulson earned her doctoral degree in education from Capella University.  She is associate professor of science education at Bethel University.  Her husband, Craig Paulson ’70 is principal of Cambridge-Isanti High School. 

Kathleen Walton-Mills has been awarded a master of arts degree in teaching and learning from NOVA Southeastern University.

Brenda G. Johnson has received a grant from Presbyterian Women USA for up to $100,000 over the next two years to support the Talitha-Kumi Christian School project in Arandis, Namibia.

William Bates earned the 2006 Sales Excellence Award from Emery-Waterhouse Company, for whom he is a territory manager.  This is the second time in four years he has won the award, which is the company’s highest recognition for sales excellence.

Katrina Addis Lewis celebrated 25 years as an ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church in March, 2005.  More than 17 years of her career have been spent at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester, West Virginia.  She has two daughters, Keely and Caitlin ’05.

Barbara Wilson Pazey has joined the staff at Lake Erie College as director of field placement and assessment services.  Previously, she had worked as a high school principal and assistant principal.  She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. 

Craig W. Anderson was elected president of the Ohio State Medical Association for 2007-2008.  Dr. Anderson has been a member of the association since 1979, and has served as a delegate to its House of Delegates and as a councilor for the its Tenth District.  He also serves as an Ohio delegate to the American Medical Association, is a member of the AMA Foundation’s Board of Trustees and is a past president of the Columbus Medical Association.  Dr. Anderson has been a Muskingum College Trustee since 1998.

Diane Doeringer Boster was named 2004 Woman of the Year by the Portsmouth Business and Women’s Club.  Diane has been the regional executive director of the Arthritis Foundation since 1984, serving a 35-county region in southeastern Ohio and West Virginia.

Gene Allen Ford retired as head basketball coach at Cambridge High School, where he has served for 25 years.  As head coach, he amassed a 400-182 record, which included 18 sectional titles, eight district titles, five regional titles and 10 East Central Ohio League championships.  Gene’s son, Geno, earlier this year was named head basketball coach at Muskingum.

Deborah A. McWilliams has retired from the Columbus Metropolitan Library after 29 years of service.  Most recently, she was the library’s director of support services. 

Thomas Young is president of Grange Bank in Columbus, Ohio.   

Larry E. Ray has been elected an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in the District of Columbia for the 2007-2008 term.  City agencies in the district must seek the counsel of the Commission before taking city actions such as zoning or alcohol licenses.  

Donald Barrett marked 30 years with the City of Columbus Health Department.  In addition, he serves as an adjunct professor in the Hospitality Management Department of Columbus State Community College, a position he has held for 20 years.  In June, 2006, he received The Hospitality Merit Award from the College of Human Ecology Hospitality Management Program at The Ohio State University, in recognition of his contributions to the field of hospitality management. Also in 2006, he received the Educator of the Year Award from the Ohio Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.  Donald’s wife is Joyce Wonnacott ’74 Barrett.

Larry E. Ray was honored by the District of Columbia Council for “twelve years of working creating and effectuating the peacemaking, mediation program at Bancroft Elementary School in Mt. Pleasant.”  The program of which Larry is a part trains students to be peer mediators or peacemakers who help students resolve conflicts peacefully.  Larry also assisted in developing an advanced negotiation course for the American Management Association.
