Student Opportunities

Performance

Students are encouraged to join any of the many performance ensembles, each of which is open (some by audition) to all students. In addition, the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra (SEOSO), the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds (MVSW), and the Choral Society are each a unique and rewarding partnership between Muskingum College and the surrounding regional community.  The SEOSO provides the opportunity for performance with a full orchestra and is open to students by audition as are the MVSW and the Choral Society.

Internships

Internships might be arranged in music recording studios, music businesses, or private teaching studios. 

Research

Students consistently do research in music history, music education, and pedagogy.

Honoraries

Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music sorority which supports and encourages women musicians of all ages, races, and nationalities, and promotes successful and innovative educational programs in music for all stages of life. SAI cultivates excellence in musical performance, promotes programs and activities that stress the love and importance of music in our lives, and dedicates financial resources that ensure the continuation of programs necessary to support its objectives.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. Since that time Sinfonia has grown into the largest music fraternity in the world, with more than 150,000 initiates, and chapters on over 200 college and university campuses across the nation, including Muskingum.

OCMEA ( Ohio Collegiate Music Educators Association ) is an organization for aspiring young music educators sponsored and organized by the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA).

Employment

The Music department employs a number of students (10-12) as office assistants and equipment movers.

Professional Activities

Students involved in OMEA routinely accompany faculty to the state meeting held each February.  Here they attend concerts, participate in workshops, etc.
