Student Opportunities

Internships

Rather than internships, we have a variety of extra field experiences that students can do in the local school districts and social agencies.

A few from last year include:

• Working with gifted 2nd graders in a program of math enrichment activities
• Serving as reading or math tutors for elementary and middle school children as part of Muskingum's community service requirement for the Federal Work-Study program
• Tutoring young adolescents in a local after-school program
• Serving as translator/interpreter for Spanish-speaking children in a local elementary building

Student Teaching

The culminating experience of each teacher education program is the professional semester completed during the student's final year in the program. This semester consists of three weeks of education coursework, one twelve-week full day student teaching placement (two six-week placements in visual arts, foreign languages, health, music, and physical education), and a final week of capstone activities.

A number of students each year can complete their student teaching experiences abroad.  In recent years, students have lived in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, England, and South Africa while completing this important requirement for their degree in Education.

Research

Students can work with faculty on collecting and analyzing data related to instructional strategies and educational programs

Honoraries

Qualified Muskingum College Education students may join Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education. KDP is committed to recognizing excellence and fostering mutual cooperation, support, and professional growth for educational professionals. Muskingum's is the fastest growing chapter in the nation!

Employment

The Education department employs two work-study students per year, mostly to work with the department secretary--making copies, compiling notebooks, etc.

Professional Activities

Our students are active in the student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children and the Middle Level Collegiate Association.  Students have recently served as panelists at the annual meeting of the Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organizations, sharing their experiences with the Raul Project, a set of biographies of students with a variety of learning needs.
