Mission Statement

Conservation science is a relatively new field that brings a multi-disciplinary approach to the complex and often multifaceted issues of species extinction, population decline, and habitat degradation. This exciting new domain of human inquiry requires a solid background in the natural sciences, but also emphasizes the analysis of economic, political, social, and ethical issues as a contextual basis for problem solving and decision-making.   The mission of the Conservation Science program is consistent with University’s mission in that the program works to advance the professional & personal development of our students in with the aim that they be able to lead productive, personally satisfying and socially responsible lives.  The goals for the major are to provide a broad and rigorous foundation in the biological sciences and other disciplines germane to conservation planning, advance critical thinking and problem solving skills, and help students identify and prepare for fulfilling professional careers.
