Chemistry Degree Options

Four degree options are available for the bachelors of science in chemistry degree. These are listed below along with brief information about each of them. Links to additional information and detailed course requirements are included.

Chemistry Major

A bachelors degree in chemistry provides an excellent background for potential employment in a variety of areas or a variety of graduate education options. Please refer to the Muskingum University Catalog for additional information.

American Chemical Society Certified Chemistry Major

This bachelors degree option is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS is an organization of professional chemists with more than 160,000 members that work in all fields of chemistry. This degree option requires course work in chemistry and physics in addition to that required for the traditional chemistry major. American Chemical Society Certified Chemistry Major with the Biochemistry Track

This degree option requires course work in chemistry, physics, and biology in addition to that required for the traditional chemistry major. This degree option is designed to prepare students for entering a professional pre-health field or graduate school in the biochemical sciences. Chemistry Major with the Pre-Pharmacy Track

Pre-Pharmacy program at Muskingum University is offered as a track within the chemistry major.  Upon completion of this major, students may apply for admission to a PharmD program.  The demographics of this country ensure a strong future for the profession of Pharmacists.  Not only are Pharmacists in great demand, but those entering the profession are able to command attractive salaries as well.  Pharmacists serve in many different areas of health-care, including working in pharmacies to being engaged in cutting-edge research in areas such as pharmacogenomics. Chemistry Major with the Pre-Health Track

The Pre-Health track is offered as a track withing the chemistry major and includes course work in chemistry and biology. This track is designed for students that want to purse medical school, veterinary school, or dental school while maintaining the future flexibiltiy of having a bachelor's degree in chemistry provides. Students would also be well prepared to move into masters or doctoral programs in chemistry or biological chemistry. Chemistry Major with the Forensic Chemistry Track

The Forensic Chemistry program at Muskingum University is offered as a track within the chemistry major, and includes course work in chemistry, criminal justice, and the interface of chemistry and biology.  Completion of this track would enable students to pursue a career working as a forensic chemist in a private or government crime laboratory.  Students would also be prepared to move into masters or doctoral programs in forensic science.  These advanced degrees can allow individuals to move into management positions in crime laboratories Please refer to the Forensic Chemistry program page and the Muskingum University Catalog for additional information.
