Student Opportunities
Chemistry majors are provided with a variety of opportunities to enhance their undergraduate education and experience at Muskingum College.
Undergraduate Research
Participation in undergraduate research is an invaluable learning experience. All department faculty mentor students in research projects. In addition support is given to students looking for summer research internship opportunities. Please see the Research and Internships page for additional information.
Award Recognition
The chemistry department annually presents scholastic and service awards recognizing outstanding student performances in these areas.
Employment by the Chemistry Department
The opportunity for work-study employment in the chemistry stockroom is available. Through this on-campus employment students can learn and practice valuable laboratory skills. Opportunities are also available for students to serve as tutors for chemistry courses once they have demonstrated a sufficient mastery of the content in those courses. Contact the department chair for additional information.
Science Educational Outreach Volunteer Work
The chemistry department supports the Wonders of Our World (W.O.W.) program. The WOW program, which, originated at the Ohio State University, enhances elementary school science programs by partnering teachers and college science faculty and students. Muskingum College students and faculty are providing volunteer support for teachers as they implement in their classrooms exciting hands-on experiments aligned with local, state, and national science education benchmarks. The Muskingum W.O.W. program is currently working with South Elementary in the Cambridge, Ohio School District.
Social Activities
The chemistry sponsors several social activities during the year to help the students and faculty get to know one another outside of the classroom setting. Please see the Departmental Events page for more information.
