McCormick, Lockhart and Weber lead Muskingum at NCAA Regional

NEW CONCORD, OHIO, March 2, 2013 - Freshman Garland McCormick finished fourth at the NCAA Regional Wrestling Championships at Ohio Northern University on Saturday to lead Muskingum University. Freshman Rusty Lockhart and junior Luke Weber also paced the squad.

McCormick ended the regional with a 4-2 record in the 149-pound bracket. McCormick opened the tournament with a 4-3 upset decision against seventh-seed Tyler Jonston of Mount Union. McCormick then dropped a hard-fought 11-8 decision against second-seed Daniel Mirman of John Carroll. McCormick then responded with three straight wins to advance to the third-place bout. He grabbed a 10-1 major decision against Mathew Neff of Lycoming, beat Brad Mayville of RIT 10-8 and notched a 9-5 decision against Eliah Golding of Brockport. McCormick slipped in his bid to advance to the NCAA National Championships against sixth-seed Luke Lohr of Waynesburg, 12-4.

Lockhart ended the day with a 2-2 record in the 184-pound weight class. He opened the bracket with a pin at the 1:44 mark against Collin Doane of RIT. Lockhart then dropped a 4-2 battle against top-seed Josh Thomson of Messiah and beat Jeff Goldenhagen of of York, 8-4. Lockhart's day ended with a tough 3-1 loss in extra time against Richard Dowdly of Heidelberg.

Weber posted a 2-2 record in the 197-pound weight class. Weber opened the day with a 10-0 major decision win against Shawn Reynolds of Thiel. Weber then fell 7-3 against top-seed Phillip Landis of Elizabethtown and beat Justin Meineke of Mount St. Joseph, 11-4. Weber lost his final bout against fourth-seed Michael Pawlitc of Ohio Northern with a fall at the 1:53 plateau.
