Tournament preview

Muskingum College will host the 24th annual Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Softball Tournament, Friday-Saturday, May 2-3.  Muskingum finished at the top of the standing with 16-2 record to become the regular-season champion and earn the home field advantage in this year’s four-team, double-elimination tournament. Mount Union College and Ohio Northern University completed the season with a 14-4 record to tie for second place, while John Carroll University finished at 11-7 for fourth place.

Kicking off the tournament will be #2 Mount Union (14-4 OAC/33-7) versus #3 Ohio Northern (14-4 OAC/25-11) at 11:00 a.m. These teams split during the regular season with Mount Union winning the first game 5-3 and Ohio Northern winning the second 2-1. This will be the seventh time these teams have met in OAC tournament play, with Mount Union prevailing 5-1 in the series.

Game two will pit #4 John Carroll (11-7 OAC/17-11) versus #1 Muskingum (16-2 OAC/31-7) at 1:00 p.m. The Muskies swept the Blue Streaks during the regular season, 7-5 and 5-3. These teams have not met in tournament play before.

#1 seed - Muskingum has appeared in all 23 OAC Tournaments and carries an astonishing 56-13 tournament record. Muskingum has won 10 straight OAC Tournament titles. The Muskies are led offensively by freshman Mary Margaret Boda (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) batting .460 with 46 hits and six home runs, along with seniors Kari Hoying (Russia/Russia Local) at .417 with 48 hits and four home runs and Heather Fields (Bradford/Covington) at .379 with 44 hits and four home runs. The Muskie pitching is led by junior Amy Mattin (Delta) with 1.43 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 171 innings of work.

#2 seed - Mount Union will be making its 16th overall stop in the OAC Tournament. Senior Lindsey Royer (Louisville/Marlington) leads the team with a .448 batting average with 56 hits, 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 43 RBI, followed by sophomore Meghen Allen (Hartville/Lake) at .429 with 60 hits, seven doubles, three triples and two home runs. Royer also leads the Raiders’ pitching with a 2.12 ERA, a 23-4 record and 169 strikeouts.

#3 seed - Ohio Northern will be making its 15th overall trip to the OAC tournament. Sophomore Liz Decima (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) has been leading the Polar Bears batting .483 with 56 hits, 12 doubles, and four home runs, along with sophomore Tina Mangola (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) batting .444 with 52 hits, 13 doubles, and nine home runs and junior Danielle Goubeaux (Coldwater) at .444 with 48 hits, six doubles and four home runs. Sophomore Cortney Cash (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) has been leading them on the mound with a 2.79 ERA with 42 strikeouts in a 120 innings.

#4 seed - John Carroll will be making its second overall tournament appearance with junior Jamie Smrdel (Kirtland/Beaumont) leading the offense batting .425 with 45 hits, nine doubles, seven home runs, followed by sophomore Julie Marlowe (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) batting .326 with 43hits. Sophomore Sam Thompson (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) leads the pitching with a 3.94 ERA in 133 innings with 78 strikeouts.
