Football names MVP's and Coaches Award for 2010 season

NEW CONCORD, OHIO, November 18, 2010 - The Muskingum University football team announced that senior quarterback Jake Burns and junior linebacker Alex Thomas have been named the team MVP's for the 2010 season. Burns finished the campaign with 1,424 yards on 128-of-224 passing with three touchdowns. He had a team-high seven touchdown runs on 145 carries for 264 yards. Burns rewrote the Muskingum record book during his career. He finished his career as the all-time leader in passing yards in a season (1,866), passing yards in a career (5,170), career total offense (6,265), season total offense (2,326), game total offense (381), career completions (434), passing attempts (759), passing touchdowns for a season (14), passing attempts for a season (269) and completions for a season (163). Burns is also tied for the all-time marks in career passing touchdowns (30) and total touchdowns in a season (23).

Thomas led the Muskingum defense, which ranked fifth in the Ohio Athletic Conference in total defense and third in pass defense, with 84 tackles. He added 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, four pass break ups and one forced fumble. Thomas ranked fifth in the OAC in tackles and first in fumble recoveries.

Shafer, a four-year player who saw playing time in the Muskie backfield, was a spirited leader on the Muskie special teams squad. He ended the season with 12 carries for 28 yards and notched 12 tackles.
