Whiteman named Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, May 25, 2010 - For the second time in his illustrious career, Muskingum University senior catcher Brock Whiteman has been honored for his play on the field and hard-work in the classroom by being named Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. Whiteman also garnered Second Team Academic All-American accolades in 2009.
Whiteman, a special education major from New Concord, Ohio, hit .383 on the year with a team-best 12 home runs, 46 RBIs and .705 slugging percentage. He tied for the team lead with 46 runs scored, belted 12 doubles and recorded a .475 on-base percentage. Whiteman ended his storied Muskingum career ranked first in career hits with 222, second in career RBIs with 176, second in career home runs with 33, second in career doubles with 47, second in career at-bats with 572, third in career batting average (.388), third in runs scored (144) and third in triples (9).
Since the end of the season, Whiteman has been honored for his play by being named First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Second Team All-Mideast Region. Additionally, he was named First Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV and Academic All-OAC for his work in the classroom.
A total of three players have been named Academic All-American under Head Coach Gregg Thompson's tenure. They include Brock Whiteman (2009, 2010), Ryan Alexander (2003) and James Grandey (1999).
