William Dentzer, Class of 1951

From 1971 until his retirement in 1994, William Dentzer served as the founding chairman of the Board and CEO of The Depository Trust Company, which has a worldwide reputation in the securities and banking industry for integrity, competence and objectivity.

In the late 1960s, trading on the New York Stock Exchange rose to such a level that trading had to be suspended and, in response to this market crisis, Mr. Dentzer and his colleagues established the Depository Trust Company and created securities and banking policies, practices, and procedures to which today’s market owes its efficiency and success.

Mr. Dentzer has lent his skills and experience in state, national and international monetary areas, serving on the State Council of Economic Advisors in New York City and as Superintendent of Banking for New York State.

He held several key federal positions focusing on international economic development, serving as Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States and with the Agency for International Development. Mr. Dentzer has committed time and expertise to his alma mater as well, serving as a trustee and as a chairman of the finance and management committee.

In 2004, he was inducted into the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Hall of Excellence.

As a Muskingum College Distinguished Professor of American Studies, Mr. Dentzer has lectured in the areas of economics, U.S. history, faith and ethics and international politics. Mr. Dentzer’s achievements in national and worldwide financial arenas and service to his alma mater and his community make him an inspiration.
