This course is an introduction to the study of mineral and crystal. It has two emphasis: crystallography and systematic mineralogy. In the study of mineral, mineral chemistry is more emphasized than mineral physics. Optical property of mineral is not covered in this course. So those who take this course should also take optical mineralogy within the same semester or in the same year.

This course is a content-focused course. The main goal is to obtain basic knowledge of mineral. There is no attempt to achieve

This course is trying to achieve the following goals:

• To know the basis element of crystallography
• To remember essential fact about selected minerals
• To introduce knowledge of mineral chemistry and mineral occurrence to prepare for the study of petrology
• To give students hands on experience in mineral identificatoin.

This course assumes student has no background knowledge regards to the stated goals. And the above goals would be assessed by the result of two review tests, one mineral ID test and four quizzes on mineral facts
